Acids A1 Flashcards
Module 2
What is an acid?
A proton (H+) donor
What is a base?
A proton (H+) acceptor
What is an alkali?
A base that dissolves in water releasing hydroxide ions
What is a salt?
A chemical compound formed from an acid when the H+ ion from the acid is replaced by a metal ion or NH4+
What is a strong acid?
An acid that completely dissociates in aqueous solution
What is a weak acid?
An acid that partially dissociates in aqueous solution
Acid + Metal –>
Salt + Hydrogen
Acid + Metal Oxide –>
Salt + Water
Acid + Alkali –>
Salt + Water
Acid + Metal Carbonate –>
Salt + Water + Carbon Dioxide
Acid + Ammonia –>
Ammonium Salt
The ratios of each compound in a reaction is know as what?
Stoichiometric ratio
Titrations questions: what results do you use to take a mean titre?
Concordant results (within 0.1cm^3 from another)
NOT rough results.
