Acid Controlling Drugs Flashcards
The stomach secretes
hydrochloric acid
Bircarbonate
Pepsinogen
Intrinsic factor
Mucus
Prostaglandins
What are the three zones of the stomach
- Cardiac zone
-Fundic or Gastric zone
-Pyloric zone
What are the glands of the stomach?
Cardiac
Pyloric
Gastric
What are the cells of the gastric gland?
Parietal
Chief
Mucous
Endocrine
Enterochromaffin
What is the function of the parietal cell?
- Produce and secrete hydrochloric acid HCL
- Primary site of action for dugs
What does HCL do ?
- Secreted by parietal cell
- Stimulated by: chocolate , food, caffeine, alcohol
-Aids in digestion of food and defends against infection in GI - Excessive secretion stimulated by : stress, large fatty meals
What is the function of chief cells?
Secrets pepsinogen (enzyme)
- pepsinogen turn to pepsin when exposed to acid
-breaks doen proteins
Function of mucous cells
- Provide protective lining to GI tract
-Protects against self digestion by HCL and enzymes
Stress related mucosal damage is common in
-ICU patients
-Patients with NG tubes and ventilators
-patients with GI bleeds
What are Antacids used for
Neutralize stomach or gastric acidity
- in patients with acid- related disorder
Types of Antacids
Aluminium
Calcium
Sodium
Magnesium
MOA antacids
-Neutralize acid secretions
-Does not prevent over production of acid
- Promotes defense mechanisms by stimulating secretions of mucus, prostaglandins, and bicarbonate from cells.
Antacids indications
Acute immediate relief of symptoms associated with
- Peptic ulcers
- Gastritis
- Gastric hypersensitivity
- Heartburns
