Acid Base In Kidneys Flashcards
1
Q
Excretion of H+ ions
A
The H+ ions that have been filtered bind to the buffers in the urine
Buffers include urea and phosphate
This binding of buffer to H+ ion gets rid of acid d from urine
The kidneys also can generate ammonia- ammonium ion binds to H+ ion to remove acid
The urea and the phosphoric acid that bind up are in a fixed quantity
To get rid of this excess acid, the kidney uses its ammonia
2
Q
Acid base control
A
When pH is low —> bicarbonate is secreted from tubular lumen into blood and H+ ions are excreted in urine/ stay in tubular lumen where they are removed by reactions with buffers, phosphates
When pH is high —> bicarbonate is excreted in urine and H+ is absorbed into blood
