Acid-Base definitions Flashcards
Acid
Proton (H+) Donars
Produces H+ in solution
Base
Proton (H+) Acceptors
Produces OH- in solution
Dilute Acid/Base
Contains very few molecules of Acid/Base in proportion to the volume of water in solution
Concentrated Acid/Base
Contains many molecules of Acid/Base in proportion to the volume of water in solution
Equivalence point
The point during a titration where the acid or base has reacted completely with the base or acid
End point
The point during a titration where the indicator changes colour
Standard solution
Solution of which the exact concentration is known
Strong Acid/Base
Ionises/Dissociates completely in water to form high concentrations of H30+/OH- ions
Weak Acid/Base
Ionises/Dissociates partially in water to form low concentrations of H30+/OH- ions
Conjugate acid base pairs
Pairs of compounds that differ by 1 hydrogen ion (H+)
Ampholyte
Can act as an acid or base
Neutralisation
Reaction between acid and base to form a salt
Hydrolysis
The ability of the ions of a salt to react with water to change the pH
