Q

Respiratory Acidosis
Patho
Causes

S/S

Treat

A

lungs retain CO2 = hypoventilating
abdominal incision, sleeping pills/narcotics, lung problems
headache, confusion, sleepy, can lead to coma (THINK SEDATION)
HYPOXIA= GIVE O2
fix breathing problem

Treat

A

losing CO2 = hyperventilating
hysterics, hyperventilation, aspirin od
lightheaded/faint, perioral numbness, numb/tingly fingers/toes

Q

Metabolic Acidosis
Patho

Causes
S/S
Treat

A
Reatain H or lose Bicarb
RR will increase
DKA, starvation, renal failure, diarrhea (severe)
depend on cause, hyperK, increased RR
treat the problem, IV sodium bicarb

Q

Metabolic Alkalosis
Patho
Causes

S/S

Treat

A

Retaining too much bicarb and excreting H
vomiting, NG suction, too many antacids, too much IV bicarb
depend on cause, watch LOC, monitor for muscle cramps and life-threatening arrythmias
fix the problem, replace K

16
Q

Metabolic Acidosis =

A

Hyperkalemia pH down, K up

17
Q

Metabolic Alkalosis =

A

Hypokalemia pH up, K down

18
Q

pH, CO2 and HCO3 all abnormal

A

partial compensation

19
Q

pH normal, CO2 and HCO3 abnormal

A

full compensation

20
Q

low end near 7.4

A

low normal = acidotic

21
Q

high end near 7.4

A

high normal = alkalotic
