Acid Base Balance Flashcards
ALKALINE
Does pH increase or decrease?
Does CO2 increase or decrease?
pH increases
CO2 decreases, hyperventilation
ACID
Does pH increase or decrease?
Does CO2 increase or decrease?
Lowers pH Increases CO2 (hypoventilation)
Increase in CO2.
Respiratory Acidosis
Decrease in CO2, is what?
Respiratory Alkalosis
METABOLIC ACIDOSIS
What’s going on inside the body?
What can cause this state?
An increase of hydrogen (acid) or the loss of bicarbonate ions (base).
Caused by respiratory failure, shock, chronic kidney failure, diabetic ketoacidosis, ingestion of products that produce acids.
METABOLIC ALKALOSIS
What’s going on in the body?
What causes it?
Results from a loss of hydrogen ions (acid) or an increase in bicarbonate ions (base).
Causes: Excessive vomiting/antacid ingestion/IV bicarbonate
RESPIRATORY ACIDOSIS
What’s going on inside the body?
CO2 levels rise in the blood due to anything that inhibits the ability to breathe.
RESPIRATORY ALKALOSIS
What’s going on inside the body?
There’s an abnormal drop in the blood CO2 levels.
Hyperventilation.
