Q

METABOLIC ACIDOSIS
What’s going on inside the body?
What can cause this state?

A

An increase of hydrogen (acid) or the loss of bicarbonate ions (base).

Caused by respiratory failure, shock, chronic kidney failure, diabetic ketoacidosis, ingestion of products that produce acids.

Q

METABOLIC ALKALOSIS
What’s going on in the body?
What causes it?

A

Results from a loss of hydrogen ions (acid) or an increase in bicarbonate ions (base).

Causes: Excessive vomiting/antacid ingestion/IV bicarbonate
