Ace Inhibitors Flashcards
What does Ace inhibitors stand for
Angiotensin Converting Enzyme ( ACE) inhibitors
Examples of ACE inhibitors
Ramipril
Lisonopril
Perindopril
What are ACE inhibitors used for
Hypertension
Chronic Heart Failure
Ischemic Heart Disease
Diabetic nephropathy and Chronic Kidney disease ( CKD)
What are the side effects of Ace Inhibitors
Hypotension
Dry cough
Hyperkaleamia
Renal failure
Angioedema
Anaphylactoid reaction
What is the mechanism of action of ACE inhibitors
ACE inhibitors blocks the action of ACE, which is to prevent the conversion of Angiontensin 1 to Angiotenson 11.
Angiotensin II is a vasoconstrictor ( narrows the blood vessels) and stimulates Aldosterone secretion. Blocking its action reduces afterload which lowers BP.
What are the contraindications of ACE inhibitors
Not to be used in patients with
Renal stenosis
Acute Kidney injury
Pregnant/ breastfeeding women
It can be helpful with some forms of CKD, only use lower doses
