Acculturation Flashcards
What is acculturation?
a process where an individual adopts, acquires and adjusts to a new cultural environment
-> as a result of being placed into a new culture
Which two dimensions does acculturation have?
1: maintain their own cultural identity
2: become involved with the new national culture
What are the 4 points of acculturation?
Assimilation, Integration, Separation and Marginalization
What is Assimilation?
- the dominant culture is perceived as superior or more advantageous for social success and personal growth
ex: fully adopt new culture and gradually lose original culture
What is integration?
- most adaptive approach, where cultural identity can be maintained while also participating effectively in the new society/culture
ex: speaking both languages, celebrating both holidays and traditions
What is separation?
- strong value placed on preserving the original cultural identity or resistance to the original culture
- globalization can enhance separation -> with technology easier to keep connection to home
ex: living in a community with others of your culture
What is Marginalization?
- often the result of exclusion or discrimination + can be enhanced by the global crisis
- Globalization can both mitigate and exacerbate marginalization depending on the openness of the host community
ex: asylum seekers feel disconnected from both cultures
Food acculturation example:
Integration: german japanese fusion sausage
Assimilation: japanese style sausage
separation: authentic german sausage
marginalization: international sausage
What factors measuer acculturation?
language fluency, socio-economic status, origanizational participation
