Acceleration Flashcards
Define acceleration
Acceleration = The rate of change of velocity
Can the value of the acceleration be negative?
Yes. This is called deceleration
What’s the unit of acceleration
m/s per second. We write it as m/s/s.
m/s/s can be simplified to m/s².
Actually, the unit depends on the input units you are measuring. If you want to measure changes in km/h per second instead of changes in m/s per second, the unit would be km/h/s.
Or cm/s/s
Or km/s/h
Whatever.
Can acceleration be the change in direction
Yes. Acceleration is the change in velocity and velocity includes direction too.
Acceleration formula
Acceleration is just change in velocity over time.
Acceleration = Δvelocity/time
An important formula that links displacement, velocities, and acceleration is
v² - u² = 2ad Where: v: final velocity u: initial velocity a: acceleration d: displacement
