Stave 5:
“I am as light as a feather, I am as happy as an angel, I am as merry as a schoolboy. I am as giddy as a drunken man. A merry Christmas to everybody! A happy New Year to all the world!”
annoate the quote.
Scrooge’s reaction to discovering it is not too late. The multiple similes emphasise Scrooge’s joy and elation at his second chance. The repetitive structure and short exclamations create the sense that he cannot put into words how happy he is. It could also show that, as it has been so long since he was happy, he finds it difficult to describe. The innocence of the ‘angel’ and the ‘schoolboy’ contrast with the hellish image of Marley’s ghost, showing the reader that he will be saved.

Stave 5:
“I will honour Christmas in my heart, and try to keep it all the year. I will live in the Past, the Present, and the Future. The Spirits of all Three shall strive within me. I will not shut out the lessons that they teach.”
annotate the quote.
He recognises the importance of Christmas as he wants to honour it. He has gone back to being like a kid and enjoying himself as he had never done before. He is living the excitement of Christmas like he never had when he was a child.
