ACC notes Flashcards
Describe central chord syndrome?
Incomplete injury to the spinal cord. More extensive MOTOR weakness in upper limbs than lower. Hyperextension injury without damage to the vertebral column. Sensory loss below the level of injury plus bladder dysfunction and urinary retention.
Describe anterior chord syndrome?
Loss of MOTOR function below the level of injury, and loss of sensation in anterior column- PAIN and TEMP BUT preservation of sensation carried out by posterior chord- FINE TOUCH and PROPRIOCEPTION.
May have areflexia, flaccid anal sphincter, urinary retention & intestinal obstruction.
What is brown-sequard syndrome?
brown-sequard syndrome: lateral hemisection of spinal cord (incomplete) → loss of motor function (hemiparaplegia), vibration sense & fine touch, loss of proprioception, loss of two-point discrimination & signs of weakness on ipsilateral side.
SO
Loss of motor, vibration, position and deep touch sensation on SAME side
Loss of pain temp and light touch on OPPOSITE SIDE
What is complete spinal chord injury?
complete loss of sensory & motor function, usually only clear 6-8wks after injury.
When exposing a patient with MSK trauma, what should you always be sure not to do?
Do not allow them to become hypothermic- this will induce coagulopathy and increased mortality from hemorrhagic stroke.
