Describe ¨ No Man´s land ¨
This is an unoccupied region which was located between the opposing trenches during WWI. Heavily defended by machine guns and land mines.
Describe Convoy System
This procedure helped to protect allied merchant ships from German U-boat attacks by having ships travel in groups in a zig-zag pattern.
Describe Central Powers
Group of nations which included Austria-Hungary, Germany, the Ottoman Empire, and Bulgaria
Describe Lusitania
This was a British passenger ship that was sunk by a German U-boat. Killed 1198, including 128 Americans. A reason the U.S. eventually entered the war.
Describe Allied Powers
Group of nations which included Great Britain, Russia, and France. The United States joined the group in April 1917.
Describe The Zimmerman Note
This was sent from Germany to Mexico, proposing a German-Mexican alliance if the U.S. entered the war. Germany promised Mexico Texas, New Mexico, and Arizona.

A law that was enacted by Congress in 1917, required men b/w the ages of 21-30 to register for the military draft.

This man was a war hero who was originally a CO (Conscientious Objector) Killed 25 Germans and captured 132 prisoners.
Describe Conscientious Objector
A person who opposes warfare based on moral grounds.

This is a truce, an agreement to stop an armed conflict.
Describe Shell Shock
This is a physical condition brought about by a constant barrage of gunfire and bombings. Today it is referred to as PTSD.
Describe Trench warfare
This was the most popular fighting style during WWI along the Western Front. Opposing forces fought from fortified ditches. Little progress made.

The policy of building up weapons to prepare for war. This led to competitive rivalries prior to WWI.
