Do Recruit Officers have police powers?
No, Recruit Officers do not have any police powers and cannot make an arrest unless they know the person committed a felony.
What must Recruit Officers not do in public?
They must not represent themselves as police officers or advise the public on police matters without authorization.
What is the probationary period for Recruit Officers?
The probationary period is 12 months of credible service during which the person performs the duties of a police officer.
What does not count as credible service during the probationary period?
Time spent on light duty, worker’s comp, injured on duty leave, sick time, military leave, admin leave, or suspension does not count.
What is a Probationary Police Officer?
A Probationary Police Officer has graduated from the academy but remains under the jurisdiction of the Division of Training and Education.
What should be done in case of a serious incident report?
Notify the Registrar as soon as possible and report any contact with a law enforcement agency in writing.
What must be reported to the Bureau Chief?
Any criminal complaint, indictment, or abuse prevention order against the officer must be reported in writing.
What is the policy on tobacco use for Recruit Officers?
Recruit Officers shall not smoke at any time, as per MGL c.41 s. 101A.
