AC3.2 Evaluate Theories Flashcards

1
Q

What’s are lombroso’s strengths

A

Goring supports his theory as he found a low order intelligence in convicts

He said criminals came out of prison worse than they entered

Research has shown that less attractive people are more likely to be considered criminal

Q

What are lombroso’s weaknesses

A

Lack of control groups so no comparison could be made

Lack of accuracy due to people’s disfigurements

Not everyone with atavistic features are criminal and not all criminals have atavistic features

Racist aspect where the atavistic features are specific to people of African descent

Q

What are Sheldon’s strengths?

A

He used a good sample size and he also had a control group to compare his results too

He did find that criminal groups were more mesomorphic

Q

What are Sheldon’s weaknesses?

A

Could not explain why ectomorphs and endomorphs were criminal

Does not take into account people’s body types change all the time

Peer pressure based on people’s expectations of mesomorphs

Q

What are the strengths of the XYY theory ?

A

Jacob found that a significant number of men in prison had the extra Y chromosome

Adler indicates that violent behaviour can be linked genetically

6
Q

What are the weaknesses of the XYY theory ?

A

Found that genetic abnormalities are widespread so does not explain aggression

Doesn’t take into account the behaviourist approach ( social learning theory etc )

Research has found that the characteristic of aggression is not associated with the XYY abnormality

Q

Twin study strengths

A

Natural experiments, the relationship between the twins are naturally occurring

Helped prevent vulnerable disorders

Q

Twin study weaknesses

A

Early twin studies lacked control and validity as the twins were not separated into MZ or DZ twins by their DNA but their appearance

Small sample group so generalisation is hard

If twins are brought up in the same environment criminality could just be related to nurture

Q

Adoption study strengths

A

Adopted children are exposed to different environments to their biological family , it is easier to separate genetic and environmental factors

There is a correlation between adopted children and their biological parents

Q

Marxism strengths

A

Provides an explanation for crime that covers all social classes and a variety of offences

Highlights the impact of selective law enforcement and how white collar crime is under-policed

Shows how the law reflects differences in power between social classes also how inequality can lead to crime

Q

Marxism weaknesses

A

Ignores non class inequalities such as gender and age

Not all working class people commit crime

Not all capitalist societies have high crime rates

Under estimates the amount of white collar crimes that are prosecuted

Q

Labelling theory strengths

A

Shows how laws are often enforced in discriminatory ways

Highlights weaknesses in official statistics which allows bias law enforcement

Highlights the role the media has in creating deviancy amplification and moral panics

13
Q

Labelling theory weaknesses

A

Fails to explain why deviant behaviour happens in the first place

Ignores the victims

Criminals do not need a label to know they are doing something wrong

Labelling doesn’t always lead to self fulfilling prophecies ( internalising the label )

Q

Right realism strengths

A

Stimulated a range of victim surveys and measures to be introduced

Offers a practical approach to tackling crime

Flood page et all supports the idea that single family homes can lead to criminality . Partially males from single parent or step parent homes were more likely to offend

Q

Right realism weaknesses

A

Focus too much on young male and street crimes

Ignores wider structural causes of crime such as poverty

Ignores the increasing gap between rich and poor , creating resentment ( relative deprivation )

16
Q

Left realism strengths

A

Explores the role of the victim of crime eg the poor and vulnerable

Recognised multiple causes of crime

Doesn’t glorify or attack the police

17
Q

Left realism weaknesses

A

Does not explain why everyone in relative deprivation don’t turn to crime

Fails to explain white collar and cooperate crimes

18
Q

Social learning theory strengths

A

Showed the role model did have an effect on the child’s behaviour

Very controlled experiment as all extraneous variables were controlled

The study has been replicated with slight changes and the results have been the same

19
Q

Social learning theory weaknesses

A

Low ecological validity as the situation was new/different for the children ( not every day situation )

Modelling typically occurs between parent and children bonds

Ethical issues as the children were exposed to violent behaviour.. concerns of both physical and psychological harm

Cumberbatch found that children who didn’t recognise the doll were 5x more likely to imitate the role model

20
Q

Freud’s theory strengths

A

Contributed to the study of childhood experiences and shows how important they are in later development

The ID , ego and super ego all relate to different parts of the brain. Pre frontal cortex is responsible for decision making like the EGO / the limbic system is the emotion centre like the ID

21
Q

Freud’s theory weaknesses

A

Difficult to test the unconscious mind

Very unscientific, subjective and lacks objective interpretation meaning different conclusions can be made

Lack of quantitative data

Freud knee his participants therefore couldn’t be objective ( judgemental )

22
Q

Eysenck’s theory of personality strengths

A

His research on soldiers supports his idea, he predicted the most traumatised soldiers would score high on neurotic

Criminal tendencies could be spotted in early childhood and policies could be brought in to prevent it developing

23
Q

Eysenck’s theory of personality weaknesses

A

Lack of reliability as people can answer questions differently depending on their mood etc

Participants could answer with what they expect the researchers wants to hear

Relies on self report measures about a persons view of their personality ( might answer to make themselves look better - social desirability bias )

Fails to consider personality changes over time
