Discuss the aim of punishment
Deterrence
discouraging an action through fear of punishment
Retribution
aim to punish an offender to the level that is deserved
Public Protection
protecting society from dangerous criminals
Reparation
compensating the victim or giving back to society
Rehabilitation
reform an individual behaviour and reintroduce them into society
Incapacitation
a sentence to prevent further offending
Restorative Justice
approach to justice in response to a crime - a meeting between the victim and offender
Examples of Rehabilitation
community sentence, probation order, unpaid work, completion of an education or training, addiction treatment
Examples of Retribution
mandatory life sentence for murder, increased punishment for hate crimes
Examples of Reparation
Fines (sum of money), community sentence, a letter of apology, repairing any damage, restorative justice
Examples of Deterrence
Physical (CCTV), Punishment (long sentences)
Individual Deterrence
measure to stop individual from reoffending through humiliation, discomfort, unpleasant sentences,.
General Deterrence
measures to prevent groups in society such as increase fear of crime and punishment, endorse social control
Example of Group deterrence
London Riots - impose harsh sentence for minor crimes e.g. a man was sentences 6 months imprisonment for the theft of a £3.50 water bottle
Example of Public Protection
imprisonment, house arrest, capital punishment, curfew
