Social Control Definition
Ways in which society tries to prevent and sanction behaviour that violates norms
Internal Forms of social control def.
Individuals own sense of right and wrong (moral compass)
External forms of social control def.
External pressures that persuade or compel members of society to conform to rules (People and organisations)
Example of external forms of social control
e. g. teachers setting detention
e. g. parents grounding a child
e. g. police officers
Internal social control: Rational Choice
People freely choose their behaviour and are motivated by avoidance of pain and the pursuit of pleasure. CRIME IS A PERSONAL CHOICE
Internal social control: Tradition
Ones traditions, customs and norms we conform to prevent us from committing crime
Customs
e.g. kissing or bowing
Tradition
e.g. family prayer, family meal or handshake
Factors that influence ones tradition
Religion, Culture, Upbringing
Internalisation of social rules and morality
Working out what is the right thing to do therefore knowing what is right from wrong
External social control: Coercion
Persuading via threat or force (physical or non-violent)
physical coercion
imprisonment or death penalty
non-violent coercion
isolation from society
External social control: fear of punishment
individual or general deterrence
Individual (fear of punishment)
