What are values?
General principles or guidelines on how we should live our lives, they tell us what is right and what is wrong, good and bad
What are norms?
Specific rules or socially accepted standards that govern people’s behaviour
What are moral codes?
Often used to describe a basic set of rules, values and principles held by an individual group, organisation or society as a whole
Where do internal forms of social control come from?
Our personalities and our values, they can also be considered to be self control
What does Freud say?
That we conform to society’s expectations and obey its rules because our superego tells us to.
What is rational ideology?
The term used to describe the way in which we internalise social rules and use them to tell us what is right and wrong
How does tradition and culture help achieve social control?
Thr culture in which we belong also becomes part of us through socialisation, we come to accept its norms, values and traditions as part of our identity.
