Why is crime represented in the media?
It is used to entertain us not to correctly inform us
What are newspapers statistics?
2/3 of crimes recorded in the newspapers are solely focused on violence
What are the differences between broadsheets and tabloids?
Broadsheets - down to earth, formal, focus on informing, larger, more words than pictures, reading age of 21, older audience, serious and considered reliable
Tabloids - exaggeration, informal, focuses on entertainment, smaller, contains more images, reading age of 6, younger audience and less educated, taboo language, uses techniques and are nicknamed ‘red tops’
What are the news values?
Dramatisation - excitement and action
Personalisation - individual human interest stories because people are nosy
Immediacy - breaking news
Violence - gathers attention
Risk - story centred on victims fear and vulnerability
Novelty - shocking new developments
Simplification - easy to understand and follow
Higher status célébrités and people
What are the most common inconceptions?
Most reported crimes are minor and missed in the papers
Most people who end up in court are older than you think
Newspapers focus on the incident not the cause or aftermath
What is the difference between fictional and factual?
(TV)
Fictional is made up and dramatic whereas factual is real footage and real storylines
Fictional tries to convey a taste of realism it requires an artistic license
What are the generalised stereotypes for the victims, police and offenders?
Victims - usually females and vulnerable
Offenders - white middle aged men who are socially awkward
Police - slow/incompetent or workaholic
What is desensitisation?
When a persons sensitivity’s is reduced and can cause the psychological barriers that direct expression of violent impulses
This leads people into thinking that they are more capable then they actually are.

Jamie was only 2 when he was lead away by two 10 year old boys that tortured and murdered him. He was found on railway line, they believe that this was inspired by watch Child’s Play 3 because the had had paint thrown into his eyes

What happened during the Columbine Massacre?
Dylan Klebold and Eric Harris went on a shooting spree after the bomb the plated in the high school failed to detonate, they killed 13 people and wounded 20. This blamed DOOM, a game that trains solders to kill.
