What is the crime control model?

A
  • Aims to deal with criminal cases quickly and effectively.
  • Aims to punish and prevent offenders
  • Zero tolerance approach (Right realism - blames individual and favours police power)
  • Protects rights of victim not offender
  • Doesn’t address causes of crime or deterrence.
  • Functionalism = punishment reinforces society’s model boundaries.

What is the due process Model?

A
  • Focuses on innocent until proven guilty
    Police powers should be limited
  • Promotes fairness and protects defendants legal rights
  • Investigations should be thorough to avoid miscarriage of justice
  • Left realism ( blames institution and argues oppressive policing makes people unlikely to abide by law)
