What are the police’s relations with agencies within the CJS
- Work with COURTS to bring defendants before them
- Work with PROBATION to mange offenders when released
- Work closely with CPS to charge and prosecute
What are the Ministry of justice’s relations with agencies within the CJS
- Oversees work of CPS
- Oversees work of PROBATION SERVICES
- Oversees PRISON SYSTEM
- Deals with the legislation/guidelines for working in different organisations of the CJS
What are the courts relations with agencies within the CJS
- Liaises with POLICE and PRISONS to ensure offenders are transported safely
- Arranges video links if the prisoner is unable to attend court
- Contributes to law creation through Judicial precedent and statutory interpretation
- Prisoners are held in court cells pending their hearing are then returned to PRISON
What are the CPS relations with agencies within the CJS
- Advises the POLICE on charging a suspect
- Works with the POLICE to check collected evidence and charge suspect if there is enough
- Appear in COURTS to conduct advocacy of case
What are the prison services relations with agencies within the CJS
- Works with PROBATION SERVICES when prisoners are being released
- JUDGE AND COURTS decide prison term
- Defendant denied bail by COURTS and POLICE are remanded to prison
- Lawyers may ask for prison visits to have legal consultations
What are the probation services relations with agencies within the CJS
- POLICE arrest prisoners recalled whilst on probation
- Liaise with POLICE for any issues whilst people are on probation
- Works with CHARITY ORGANISATIONS to help prisoners leave successfully and have support
EXAMPLE: The Prison Advice & Care Trust (supports people affected by imprisonment)
What are the relationships between the Criminal Justice System?
LAW CREATION: Criminal law is made in parliament
POLICE: enforce the law by investigating, arrest, detain and interview suspects
CPS: Advice the police on appropriate charges
COURT: Suspect is brought before the court
CUSTODY: Defendant that is released on bail is remanded into custody
JUDGE & JURY: A guilty plea results in sentencing and not guilty plea results in a trial
SENTENCING COUNCIL: If convicted a formal punishment is given by a judge where a sentencing council approves the guidelines and they may be sent to PRISON
PRISON: Oversees welfare of prisoner and enforces punishment
PROBATION SERVICE: When released prisoners are often on license and therefore overseen by the probation service
