Overview of the purpose of the CJS
A
- Create laws and administer them - this involves passing of criminal laws by Parliament
- Law enforcement by Police
- Courts - prosecution and defence in determining outcome of criminal cases
- Punishment of convicted offenders through prison and probation service

A
- parliament passes acts (legislation and statue law)
- judges create law by setting judicial precedents that other courts must follow, and by interpreting the meaning of statues
- this system is administered by the Ministry of Justice and The Home Office

What is MAPPA?
A
Multi-Agency Public Protection Arrangements
- they assess and manage the risk of sexual and violent offenders when released
- consists of police, probation, prison and other agencies such as the Mental Health Service

How does the police work with the CPS?
A
- Police gather evidence and submit the evidence to the CPS
- CPS will advise police on charging a suspect
- Police will advise suspect of charge based on CPS decision

How does the police work with the Courts?
A
- If an individual is deemed dangerous, police will remand the individual in custody until the next court date
- Police may attend court to validate evidence as prosecution witnesses
- Police will attend court to protect vulnerable witnesses

How do the police work with probation?
A
- they conduct joint visits on individuals under MAPPA (e.g. sex offenders) to manage risk
- Arrest individuals who breach licence conditions on behalf of probation
- Probation will also contact police to arrest individuals who have breached

How do the police work with prisons?
A
- police will arrest prisoners who have breached licence conditions
- work alongside prison and probation under MAPPA to manage risks regarding dangerous offenders

A
- The CPS prepare and present the prosecution case against the offenders
- prepare appeals against unduly lenient sentences

A
- the prison holds individuals attending court, pending their transfer/return to prison
- they arrange video recordings and live links for prisoners giving evidence from prison

A
- probation prepare pre-sentencing reports on offenders
- they supervise offenders who have been given a community sentence by the court
- they supervise drug testing under the courts orders

- probation supervise prisoners who are released on licence.
