Ann Ming - reasons/background
A
- Double Jeopardy law campaign started after Billy Dunlop killed Ann Ming’s daughter, Julie Hobbs
- Dunlop was tried and found not guilty, however he later confessed to his friends but the double jeopardy law meant he could not be retried for the murder and so Ann Ming wanted to change this law

A
- she lobbied parliament/MPs and engaged with the media, e.g. through interviews in order to keep her campaign on peoples radar

- she changed the double jeopardy law so that people could be retired for serious offences, e.g. murder, rape, etc.
- this applied to incidents that happened before and after the law was brought into place

A
- Bobby Turnbull’s mother, sister and aunt were murdered in the new year by gunman Michael Atherton
- Atherton owned six weapons, including three shotguns, despite having a history of domestic violence
- Turnball wanted to change gun laws

A
- spoke to BBC ‘inside out’ about the night of the murders and did a lot of public speaking
- started a petition to change gun laws which gained 20,000 signatures

- Amendment to the firearms act 1968 that prevented any person who received a suspended sentence of three months or more from possessing or purchasing a firearm
- every incident of domestic violence promotes a police review of firearms certificate
