policy
Any course of action or procedure by an individual group with authority and power that determines actions decisions and priorities, and that affects others.
formal policy
This is linked to official ideas to prevent crime such as prison sentences and community sentences.
Informal policy
This is linked to non-official ideas to prevent crime. This could be family rules.
e.g., grounding or withholding pocket money.
Primary prevention
These programmes aim to identify and treat problems and disorders before they potentially lead to crime.
These can include mental health support, schools, counselling, substance abuse clinics and social workers.
Secondary prevention
These programmes are used after a crime has already been committed.
These include treatments or therapies for offenders.
e.g., substance abusers, sex offender treatment and anger management.
