Q

What was Bowlby’s attachment theory?

A

Bowlby’s (1994) theory of attachment, which supports the proposition that a child needs a stable home environment to develop appropriately. However, it may be argued that the separation experienced in childhood has led to affectionate psychopathy where individuals feel no remorse for their victims or guilt for the crime they have committed.

Q

How does the brain damage theory relate to the Fred West case?

A

Given the brain damage that Fred received as a result of a motorcycle accident, it may be that this provides a biological reason for his criminality. Research has shown that damage to the pre-frontal cortex area if the brain can impact a person’s ability to control their impulsive behaviour.

Q

How does Eysnck’s theory relate to the Nick Leeson case?

A

According to this theory, criminals are more likely to be extrovert, impulsive and thrill seeking. It could be argued that Leeson was willing to take chances in financial transactions, running the risk of being caught but enjoying the thrill of making money.
