what is social control?
-enforcement of conformity by society
- the influence of any element of social life
- society’s attempts to discourage behavior that harms society
- society’s attempt to make us conform to social norms and values
what factors can control behaviour?
-family
-work
-peer groups
-legal system
-schools
-religion
how can family control behaviour?
-develops the way that we understand right from wrong
-the possibility to shun us from the family if people move away from the norms
how can work control behaviour?
-if you start breaking the work rules you run the risk of being fired
how can peer groups control behaviour?
people are likely to act in a different way if they are in a group setting
how can the legal system control behaviour?
they are the ones that create and enforce the laws
how can schools control behaviour?
-schools have their own set of rules
-if the rules are followed there’s the risk that they will get detention
how can religion control behaviour?
-each religion has different morals and rules
-e.g. Māori people see tattoos as sacred where as Judaism will not accept them
what is rational ideology?
-Needed to achieve social control
-Conscience, feelings of guilt, anxiety and worry from within, guides you to reach a solution and follow laws and rules
