AC 2012-04 Translation Errors - Lyons Flashcards
1 John 5:7,8 KJV
For there are three that bear record in heaven, the Father, the Word, and the Holy Ghost: and these three are one.
And there are three that bear witness in earth, the spirit, and the water, and the blood: and these three agree in one.
“The texts read, ‘the Spirit, and the water’, & c., omitting all the words from ‘in heaven’ to ‘in earth’ (v. 8) inclusive. The words are not found in any Gr. MS. before the sixteenth century. They were first seen in the margin of some Latin copies. Thence they have crept into the text.”
E.W. Bullinger, The Companion Bible, p.1876, 1974
1 John 5:7,8 NASB
For there are three that testify: the Spirit and the water and the blood; and the three are in agreement.
1 Timothy 3:16 KJV
And without controversy great is the mystery of godliness: God was manifest in the flesh, justified in the Spirit, seen of angels, preached unto the Gentiles, believed on in the world, received up into glory.
“We have a pretty good idea that this error was accomplished by either (1) one additional stroke of a pen changing the Greek word from ‘who’ to ‘God’ or (2) by two additional strokes of a pen changing the Greek word from ‘which’ to ‘God’, or (3) by ink bleeding through the media.”
“No early manuscripts contain this version of the verse. The corrupted version of this text appears only after the doctrine of the Trinity was developed in the fourth/fifth century.”
“The Greek grammar also indicates this rendering is wrong.”

1 Timothy 3:16 NASB
By common confession, great is the mystery of godliness: He who was revealed in the flesh, Was vindicated in the Spirit, Seen by angels, Proclaimed among the nations, Believed on in the world, Taken up in glory.
Matthew 28:18,19
And Jesus came up and spoke to them, saying, “ All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit,
Luke 24:45-47
Then He opened their minds to understand the Scriptures, and He said to them, “ Thus it is written, that the Christ would suffer and rise again from the dead the third day, and that repentance for forgiveness of sins would be proclaimed in His name to all the nations, beginning from Jerusalem.
. . . parallel section of scripture (to Matt 28:19)
Bob L’s comment on Matthew 28:19
All the critical Greek manuscripts from the 4th century on have this triune formula. We have no manuscripts from the first three centuries. One of the major reasons for this is the persecution of Diocletian in 303 A.D.
John 8:58
Jesus said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, before Abraham was born, I am.”
Bob L’s comments on John 8:58
There is confusion here because of the Greek phrase “ego eimi.” This phrase can be translated either “I am he” or “I am (he)” or “I am the one.” This is recognized as correct by all Greek scholars. We will allow the context to dictate the meaning of the phrase.
John 8:53-58
Surely You are not greater than our father Abraham, who died? The prophets died too; whom do You make Yourself out to be?” Jesus answered, “ If I glorify Myself, My glory is nothing; it is My Father who glorifies Me, of whom you say, ‘He is our God ’; and you have not come to know Him, but I know Him; and if I say that I do not know Him, I will be a liar like you, but I do know Him and keep His word. Your father Abraham rejoiced to see My day, and he saw it and was glad.” So the Jews said to Him, “You are not yet fifty years old, and have You seen Abraham?” Jesus said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, before Abraham was born, I am.”
