Q

What happened in the Abyssinian Crisis?

A

In 1934 there was clash between Italian and Abyssinian soldiers at Wal-Wal.
The League was supposed to sort this out but Mussolini started to prepare an attack.
The League used Moral Condemnation but Mussolini ignored them.
The league then used Sanctions but did not stop trading things that Mussolini need to invade such as coal and iron because Britain and France needed the money.
The USA also traded oil with Italy so they could still use this.
Britain & France came up with the Hoare- Laval Pact (a secret deal) where they would give Mussolini 2/3 of Abyssinia if he stopped the invasion but people found out and didn’t agree with it so they stopped it.
Mussolini took over the whole of Abyssinian and Italy left the League 1936.

Q

How did they League fail during the Abyssinian Crisis?

A

Sanctions did not work because the USA was not part of the League.
Britain and France were too worried about themselves so they didn’t do everything they could have.
They also wanted to keep Mussolini on their side against Hitler so they tried not to upset him too much.
