A/N Callout Criteria

A
  1. Child Death 17 or younger
  2. Death of fetus 24 weeks gestational age
  3. Shaken baby; substantional body injury
  4. Near drowning with child hospitalized
  5. Drowning
  6. Head Trauma / fractures of any type
  7. Child burns
  8. Child left in a vehicle and child hospitalized
  9. Firearm related (accidental discharge)
  10. Child suicide or attempt 17 or younger

A/N Elder abuse Callout

A
  1. Head trauma and fractures (60 and older)
  2. Elder / Vulnerable person death (abuse / neglect related)
  3. Walk away from group home due to neglect from group home
  4. Abuse occurring in a group home
  5. Bed ridden / Non-mobile with severe bed sores
  6. Substantial injury from abuse or neglect
  7. Extreme Malnutrition
  8. Domestic disturbance ; injuries caused from abuse

Abuse Neglect Investigative steps

A
  1. Brief at hospital
  2. Be sure CPS has been notified
  3. Confirm injuries with Doctor and if consistent with parent e plantation
  4. Attend body examination with coroner if 419
  5. Speak with parents and obtain statements (for death cases coroner investigator will be present)
    5.Obtain consent to go to scene with parents if they are willing.
  6. Do a re-enactment with parents and record it.
  7. Timeline of who has had the child
  8. Document the scene. Photographs, measurements, water temperature, hot water heater setting.
  9. Schedule parents for polygraph
  10. Determine if cell phones are needed immediately or if they can wait.(texts, web search, photos)
  11. Follow up photographs of child and injuries to show healing process
  12. Attend autopsies for death scenes
  13. Determine if charges are appropriate.
  14. Cases can be brought to SPAN which is a meeting with the similar to SART
  15. Looking to explain any injuries you cant see or that may show up during autopsy or toxicology

Items to ask during parental interviews

A
  1. Timeline of who had the child 72 hours for acute injuries
  2. How the injuries occurred
  3. Where and when they injuries occurred
  4. Any witnesses to the injuries
  5. Is the child sick
  6. How is child disciplined
  7. Who is allowed to discipline the child
  8. Any other injuries the child may have that cannot be seen?
  9. Who last saw child
  10. Who found child
  11. Siblings / how old/ any history of violence
  12. Recent medications or any they have access to
