Absorption Of Triglycerides Flashcards
1
Q
Describe and explain how triglycerides are absorbed
A
- Micelles (bile salts + monoglycerides + fatty acids) break down releasing the monoglycerides and fatty acids which can easily diffuse through the cell surface membrane of the epithelial cell of ileum
- Monoglycerides and fatty acids are re-synthesised into triglycerides in the smooth endoplamsic reticulum
- They associate with cholesterol and lipoproteins in the Golgi to form chylomicrons
- Chylomicrons move out of the epithelial cells by exocytosis and enter lacteals (lymphatic capillaries)
- Pass through the lymphatic vessels and into the bloodstream
