Absorption, assmilation of digested food and egestion Flashcards
How does absorption occur
In the stomach the food molecules are digested chemically by enzymes and broken down into smaller molecules
These molecules move into the small intestine where absorption takes place
Absorption can take place in the mouth or stomach, but mostly in the small intestine
Absorption
The products of digestion, that move through the wall of the digestive tract into the small intestine
Name some characteristics of the lining of the small intestine
Surface must be thin
The absorbed molecules must be able to transported away quickly
The surface must be moist
There are microvilli present on the outer layer of columned epithiliem cells which increase the surface area
The surface must be folded to increase the surface area
