Absorption and egestion Flashcards
What is digestion?
It is the process of breaking down food to enable absorption
What are the first 3 parts of the digestive system.
Mouth, salivary glands, oesophagus
What are the other 3 key parts of the digestive system?
Stomach, small intestine, large intestine
What other organs are involved in the process?
Liver, gall bladder, pancreas, rectum and anus
The liver produces bile…
which helps the digestion of lipids (fats and oil).
The pancreas produces biological catalysts called digestive enzymes…
which speed up the digestive reactions.
what is ingestion?
Eating
What is the process of breaking down food called?
Digestion
What is absorption
The process nutrients being absorbed into the bloodstream
What is the process called where waste is removed
Egestion
how are villi adapted for absorption
they have a high concentration of blood and one cell thick wall and a big surface area. because the blood has a low concentration of nutrients it is easy for the nutrients to diffuse into the blood stream.
where are the villi located
small intestine
