Abrasives Flashcards
Abrasive machining
using abrasive material to remove material at high cutting spped and shallow doc
abrasives can be
mounted
free
close packed
how is the steel workpiece held for a grinding wheel work
steel workpiece attached to table via magnetic chuck
what amaterials can be abrasives be made og
sandstone
emery
quartz
diamond
size of abrasive controls what
how much material is removed and the surface finish
large grain size
more removal at less time but at cost of SF
Grit geometry
abrasive grains are not uniformly shaped nor uniformly distributed. the surface is designed for the average distribution.
in abrasives what can chips of abrasives do
cut
rub
plow
negative rake angle may cause what?
more plow than cut
cutting rubbing plowing usually depend on
the size of that tooth and orientation
grinding wheel, truing dressing
as grinding wheels work they eventually start loosing shape and the diameter gets smaller, truing will restore the geometry and dressing will remove the lodged chips
crush dressing
will constantly run against grind wheel while its working and make sure it maintains its shape
grinding wheel operational parameters
grinding wheel balance
can cause vibration which will cause losing balance and eventually breaking - truing!
grinding safety
using fluid
types of grinding: surface grinding
grinding flat workpieces
two forms of cutting: conventional and creep feed
conventional and creep feed surface grinding
conventional: harder wheel and will have a high cutting speed and make many passes
will retain the shape of the wheel longer and is slow
creep feed grinding:
softer wheels and abrades itself faster but there is a crush dresser takes large DOC at low feed rates
wheres out fast yet dresser maintains needed doc
