What is Abraham Maslow’s approach?
Humanistic approach
The humanistic psychologists explored human behavior at its worst and criticized a movement for only studying the disturbing side of human nature. What movement are they criticizing?
The psychoanalytic movement
What are the five instinctoid needs in Maslow’s hierarchy of needs?
Physiological, Safety, Love and belonging, Esteem, Self-actualization.
Do people whose physiological needs are not satisfied feel the urge to satisfy the need for esteem?
No. The lower needs must be at least partially satisfied before higher needs become influential.
Are we driven by all needs at the same time?
No, only one need will dominate our personality. Ex: People who are successful in their careers are no longer driven by or aware of their physiological or safety needs.
When do physiological and safety needs arise?
Infancy
When do belongingness and esteem needs arise?
In adolescence?
When does the need for self-actualization arise?
Self-actualization.
What is a failure to satisfy lower needs?
Deficiency needs, deficit or lack in the individual.
Higher needs are less necessary for survival, but they still contribute to survival and growth. What did Maslow call higher needs?
growth, being needs
Does a need have to be fully satisfied before the next need in the hierarchy becomes important?
No.
