- Saves lives
- Find abnormal cell changes so easier to treat

Limitations to screening (4)
- Does not prevent all cases of cervical cancer..
- Some women will still develop cervical cancer despite regular screening.
- Some abnormal cell changes will be missed
- Screening will not find every abnormal cell change
Why are abnormalities missed (3)
- Sometimes they do. not look different to normal cells 2. There may be very few abnormal cells in a sample
- The person reading your sample may miss the abnormality
If 1000 women are screened…

15 of these women will have these cells found through screening
5 women may develop cervical cancer

- Discomfort, embarassment, pain
- Anxiety waiting for test results
- Side effects / complications from colposcopy

Four types of result and meanings
- Normal. - no cause for concern
- Unsatisfactory - not enough cells in the screening sample
- Can’t be processed - vial may have been damaged or expired
- Contact your GP/nurse - ma be abnormalities, smear taker will have more details
