  1. Abolition of slavery act only immediately freed slaves under 6, rest were given freedom 4 years later. The empire paid over 20 million pound in compensation for a loss of property.

Why did people start to become against slavery?

A

People began accepting that it wrong wrong, it was against their Christian religious beliefs, and people began comparing work conditions in factories, and workers were referred to as ‘white-slaves’.
If they opposed against the poor work conditions in factories, then they should oppose slavery

A

Created by William Wilberforce (MP). They held public meetings to educate people.
They made pamphlets and posters
Society members wore badges
They began to raise awareness.
Many workers in Manchester supported the movement and signed petitions to parliament.

People believed it was against Christianity

What did Thomas Clarkson and granville sharp do?

A

Clarkson - collected information about slavery and conditions of slave ships/
Produced pamphlets to show the poor conditions
Viewed slavery as being evil
Granville sharp - brought to public attention about the zong ship, and 130 sick slaves who got thrown over board

Anti - abolitionists

A

MPs and Lords made a lot of money from slavery
if slavery ended then plantation owner would have to pay for workers, which means MPs could lose money
‘White man’s burden’, blacks were inferior and had to be locked up

A

Slaves always resisted and tried to escape
Marooned escaped a plantation from the British in Jamaica.
The British had to keep it quiet that slaves rebelled and escaped
French Revolution promoted ideas to slaves to rebel

A

Toussaint lovre and Slaves took over the plantation and the island, and killed the plantation owners.
British and french failed to stop the rebellion
