what are the first moves in abolition of slavery

A
  • as early in the 12th century, although it didn’t largely make a difference to world attitudes as slavery was still practised heavily druing the Colonial periods

18TH CENTURY ENGLISH ABOLITION
- an attempt to get rid of the slave trade
- abolitionists picked up on ideas of the brutal tratment of slaves and violations of their rights
- landmark case of the Sommersett case established that slavery was ruled illegal (this only abolished slavery in England, NOT the whole British empire)
- William Wilberforce: main campaigner that drove abolition
- Slavery Abolition Act UK: passed in 1883, freeing all remaining slaves in the British Empire

AMERICAN ABOLITION
- south and Central american countries abolished slavery during wars for independece agianst spain around 1810-22
- Northern American support for abolition versus Southern American opposition to abolition
(American civil war 1861 - 65)
- Thirteenth amendment: all US slaves were officially freed by this addition to the US Consitution, winning of Northern America to the South also catalysed this

POST WW2 MOVES
- World war 2 ends, brings the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, which outlawed slavery worldwide
- Mauritania as the last country to abolish slavery
