Statistical infrequency
human behaviour is abnormal if it falls outside the range that is typical for most people, in other words the average is notmal. The inns such as height, weight and intelligence fall within fairly broad areas
Deviation from social norms
Behavior that deviates from norms that are considered abnormal in cultures/ areas
Failure to function adequately
A person is unable to lead a normal life or engage in normal behaviours, like taking part in normal activities or keeping a job, shopping or relationships
Two major indicators of failure to function adequately are
Maladaptiveness of behaviour- interferes with an individual’s ability to lead a normal everyday life day life (not maintaining personal hygiene)
Personal distress- distress is the main symptom of depression, disturbed sleep, headaches and constant tiredness
