Examine the concepts of Normality and Abnormality.
Approaches - to define abnormality: Social norms, statistical norms, maladaptive behavior and deviation from mental health criterion. Context ! Time, society, culture !
There is always a cross over between normality and abnormality. Impossible to say whats normality without comparing abnormality.
Discuss Validity and reliability in diagnosis.
Validity - if it is actually showing what is supposed to be measured, in this case, example: classifications of symptoms shows the accurate disorder. Difficult to asses in absence of absolute standards.
Reliability - consistency (of diagnosis e.g.) - In diagnosis, to improve = operational criteria and/or standardized interview schedules to avoid subjectivity.
Diagnosis - Symptoms and signs of disorders overlap each other.
Rosenhan et al ( 1973) - Aim: illustrate poor reliablity of the diagnostic classification system, negative consequences of being institutionalized. 8 people.

Disorder - Depression.
Group treatment - clients, usually same type of disorder, strength: share experiences, healing process, less expensive, good long-term outcomes of children, not alone, develop social skills, saves time. Limitations: time prediction is difficult, disclosure (conformity, Asch), confidentiality, cultural considerations.
