Define Somatoform disorders
occur when a person manifests a psychological problem through physiological symptom
Define Hypochondriasis (somatoform)
an individual has frequent physical complaints -> doctor can’t locate cause
believe minor issues are severe (headache,tummy ache )
define Conversion (somatoform)
individual reports existence of severe physical problems w/o biological reason
ex: blindness, paralysis
define Dissociative disorders
disorders that disrupt conscious process
3 types:
1 psychogenic amnesia
2 dissociative fugue
3 dissociative identity
what is psychogenic amnesia
person cannot remember things w/ no physiological basis for disruption
Retrograde amnesia last for hrs-yrs
trauma or stressful nature is lost
what is dissociative fugue
reversible amnesia for personal identity
usually unplanned travel - accompanied by new personality
what is dissociation identity (DID)
person has several personalities
triggers/situations can switch personality
-> can be random
define mood disorders
extreme or inappropriate emotion

1 Major depression
2 seasonal affective (SAD)
3 bipolar
major depression
severe long lasting + debilitating sadness
unhappy for @ least 2 weeks w/o cause
symptoms: sadness, loss sense of humor, suicidal, +anxiety
Seasonal Affective (SAD)
experience depression during winter months
-> based on sun not temperature
treated w light therapy
define Bipolar
formally manic depression
periods of depression + manic episodes
manic = high energy
-> confident or irritable
engage in risky behavior during ep.
define schizophrenic disorders
chronic mental illness
loss of reality | 1/100 ppl diagnosed
symptoms: disorganized thinking, disturbed perceptions, inappropriate emotions + actions

most common: preoccupation w delusions or hallucinations

loss of motor skills or hyperactive motor activity

what is body dysmorphia
persistent + intrusive preoccupations w/ an image / slight defect in one’s appearance
think abt real/ perceived flaws for hrs
can’t control negative thoughts
may undergo surgery = never satisfied
what is anorexia nervosa
a relentless pursuit of thinness
extreme disturbed eating habits
disturbed body image + fear of weight gain
what is Bulimia nervosa
frequent episodes of binge eating
frantic efforts to avoid weight gain
desire to lose weight or stay thin + compulsion to binge
not all bulimia ^ others = fasting excessive exercise etc
what is binge eating?
intake 3-5k calories within an hour
-> healthy = 2-3k a day
