Q

Air Drops

A

4 Ps (Pilot, Plane, Package, Place)
TWACA:
Trim,
Window,
Altitude,
Checklist,
Airspeed

Cautions:
Avoid package drops when heavily loaded.
Use Before-landing checklist.
Survey the drop area from a safe altitude to determine from the terrain and winds the best direction for approaching and departing the drop area.
Make practice approaches from several different directions to determine best option.
Limit radio communications while the aircraft is below 500 feet AGL and make none whatsoever during the actual approach, drop, and departure.
Just before entering the drop zone, add power and trim for hands-off level (i.e. terrain paralleling) flight.
Do not look back attempting to see results of the drop (ask crew members to look, or circle back to check).

Q

Airstrip Eval

A

Wind / LASSO (Length, Altitude, Surface, Slope, Obstructions)

Three Passes:
High (500-1000’, Wind, Direction of slope, Obstructions)

Medium (50-100’, Length, Altitude, Obstructions)

Low (5-10’, Surface, Slope, Obstructions)

Three Questions:
Land?
Takeoff?
Abort Point?

Perform a “high” pass:
500’-1000’ AGL, approximate traffic pattern altitude and track.
Check Wind indications.
Evaluate general Slope of the airstrip.
Observe possible Obstructions.
Determine if it is safe to go lower and direction of next pass.
Perform a “medium” pass:
Begin at pattern altitude and complete the Before Landing Checklist.
Normally use 90 KIAS & 20º flap.
Normally fly down slope, away from rising terrain.
50’-100’ AGL over the airstrip if possible, flying level, avoid close-in terrain and obstacles.
Check airstrip Length by timing the pass.
Check the Altitude by noting the altimeter reading.
Evaluate Obstructions.
Determine if it is safe to go lower.
Perform a “low” pass:
Begin at pattern altitude and complete the Before Landing Checklist.
Normally use 90 KIAS & 20º flap.
Normally fly down slope, away from rising terrain.
5’-10’ above the surface.
Confirm the Surface type and condition.
Check Slope by noting altimeter change from end to end.
Confirm the Altitude and Obstructions.
