ABGs Flashcards
1
Q
Causes of respiratory alkalosis (4)
A
- hyperventilation (pain, fever, anxiety)
- hypermetabolic states (trauma, burns, seizures)
- high rate on mechanical ventilation
- CNS disorders (stroke)
2
Q
S/s of Respiratory Alkalosis (3)
A
- pericubital numbness (hypocalcemia because Ca binds to albumin more in alkalosis)
- hypoxia
- tachycardia
3
Q
Causes of respiratory acidosis (4)
A
- COPD, CAL
- Cardiac arrest
- Sedation
- Lactic acidosis
4
Q
S/s of respiratory acidosis (3)
A
- hypoxia
- headache
- confusion
5
Q
Causes of metabolic acidosis (6)
A
- renal failure
- lactic acidosis - liver failure
- hyperkalemia
- DKA
- diarrhea (huge loss of bicarb)
- fistulas
6
Q
S/s of metabolic acidosis (2)
A
- lethargy
- weakness
7
Q
Causes of metabolic alkalosis (7)
A
- hypokalemia
- vomiting
- NaHCO3 (meds for heartburn)
- NGT suctioning
- hypovlemia (contraction alkalosis)
- Cushing’s (a lot of aldosterone)
- overproduction of bicarb by kidneys
8
Q
S/s of metabolic alkalosis
A
- weak
- fatigue
- decreased BP
- decreased RR (body is basic –> low CO2 –> wants to retain CO2)
9
Q
Increase in acid production secondary to hypoxia
A
Base deficit
