ABGs Flashcards
What is the normal range for pH?
7.35 - 7.45
What is the normal range for PaO2?
> 10.6kPa (75-100mmHg)
What is the normal range for PaCO2?
4.7 - 6kPa (35-45 mmHg)
What is the normal range for HCO3?
22-28mmol/L
Define metabolic acidosis
Low pH and Low HCO3
Causes of metabolic acidosis will depend on the value of the anion gap (normal range 10-18mmol/L)
Define metabolic alkalosis
High pH and High HCO3
Define respiratory acidosis
Low pH and High CO2
Define respiratory alkalosis
High pH and Low CO2
What does a low pCO2 correspond with?
Hyperventilation - which should normally correspond with a high pO2.
If pCO2 is low and pO2 is normal or low, this may be an indication that the patient is beginning to go into respiratory distress. Seek help ASAP.
