Q

Define metabolic acidosis

A

Low pH and Low HCO3

Causes of metabolic acidosis will depend on the value of the anion gap (normal range 10-18mmol/L)

Q

What does a low pCO2 correspond with?

A

Hyperventilation - which should normally correspond with a high pO2.

If pCO2 is low and pO2 is normal or low, this may be an indication that the patient is beginning to go into respiratory distress. Seek help ASAP.
