- Family members experiencing same problems?

- Bowel elimination (routine and changes)
- Use of laxitives
- Stool color/consistency
- Abdominal pain
What important data would indicate a problem for stool consistency and color?
Black/tarry

What are the steps for a physical examination for abdominal assessment?
- Inspection
- Auscultation
- Percussion
- Palpation

Save the painful area for last

- Contour (flat-rounded)
- Symmetry (symmetric bilaterally)

- Flat

What are these abnormal contour findings?
- Scaphoid
- Protuberant
What are expected findings of the umbilicus?
Midline and inverted
No discoloration (even with piercing)
No hernia
What are expected findings of umbilicus when pregnant?
Pushed upward and everted
What are expected findings of the stomach?
For a skinny person?
Homogenous color, smooth
Skinny= Veins may be visible
