What are the terms used to describe general contour of the abdomen?
Flat, distended, scaphoid (low body fat), protuberant
What two things can cause a caput medusa?
- Liver cirrhosis
2. IVC obstruction
What is rectus diasthesis and how do physicians test for it?
Weakening in the ant. abdominal wall.
Appears as a distended ridge when the patient flexes their head and upper thorax while lying supine.
What is borborygmus?
Rumbling of the large intestine.
normal is 5-34/minute
What is “tinkling” in regards to the abdominal PE and what does it indicate?
High pitched fountain sound in the abdomen on auscultation. Indicates intestinal air and fluid under high pressure in a dilated bowel.
What does a venous hum indicate?
Liver cirrhosis.
Heard in both systole and diastole because of extra collateral circulation in the hepatic portal system.
What do friction rubs indicate?
Inflammed peritoneal surfaces.
What is Murphy Sign?
Physician pushes up under right costal margin and asks the patient to inhale deeply. Pain or cessation of the inhalation indicates cholecytitis.
What is the Lloyd Punch?
Strong percussion using a fist in the posterior abdominal wall. Pain indicates nephrolithiasis, hydronephrosis, or pyelonephritis
