Abdomen Flashcards
How far superiorly does the abdomen extend
4th intercostal space
–protects some abdominal viscera
What are the boundaries of the abdomen
superiorly: diaphragm
Inferiorly: plane of pelvic inlet
anteriorly: anterior abdominal wall
posteriorly: posterior abdominal wall
What is the abdominopelvic cavity
area between the thoracic diaphragm and pelvic diaphragm
-continuous with pelvic cavity
What lines the abdominopelvic cavity
peritoneum
-also covers the viscera
Where is the peritoneal cavity
between peritoneal layers in abdominal cavity
What are the planes that create the regions of the abdomen
- Subcostal plane-horizontal line inferior to 10th costal cartilage
- Transtubercular plane- horizontal line through iliac tubercles and L5 vertebrae
- Midclavicular plane- vertical line through the midpoint of both clavicles and midlinguinal points
What are the 9 regions of the abdomen
epigastric region R/L hypochondriac regions Umbilical region R/L lateral regions Pubic region R/L inguinal regions
What is the transumbilical plane
horizontal plane umbilicus and IVD L3-4
What is the Median Plane of the abdomen
vertical line through midpoint of body
What doe the transumbilical and median planes form
right and left upper quadrant
right and left lower quadrant
