Abbrvz & Terms Flashcards
IFR
Instrument Flight Rules
One of two sets of regulations governing civil aviation aircraft operations. (The other is VFR.) The set of regulations for when a pilot operates an aircraft when they can’t see clearly enough. There are 5 critical parts of an IFR clearance, C.R.A.F.T.

VFR
Visual Flight Rules
Regulation pilot operates under in weather better than “basic VFR weather minima.” Pilot must visually reference the ground and visually avoid objects and other aircrafts.
VMC
Visual Meteorological Conditions
Conditions in which pilots have sufficient visibility to maintain separation from terrain and other aircraft.
Opposite IMC.
IMC
Instrument Meteorological Conditions
Flight category requiring pilots to fly primarily by reference to instruments (by IFR)
VMC minima
Visual Meteorological Conditions minima, the boundary criteria between IMC & VMC, defined by: visibility, cloud ceiling (take offs and landings), & cloud clearance.
ICAO
International Civil Aviation Organization
Special agency of the United Nations, HQ in Montreal, Canada
IATA
International Air Transport Association, codes specifically support the airline travel industry, whereas ICAO more broadly support international flight operations regardless of type.
AGL & MSL
Above Ground Level, the literal ground beneath your aircraft.
Mean Sea Level, the true altitude or elevation. It’s the average height above standard sea level where the atmospheric pressure is measured in order to calibrate altitude.
PHAK (Pee- Hak)
Pilot Handbook of Aeronautical Knowledge
Altimetry & Bathymetry
Measurement of height or altitude.
Measurement of depth of water in oceans, seas, or lakes.
ELT
Emergency Locator Transmitter
Avionics
Electrical & Electronic devices in aviation
AOPA
Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association
PIC
Pilot in Command
