A3: Skin Hazard Flashcards
1
Q
Symptoms of burns?
A
Blister, pain, erythema and charred skin
2
Q
What are the skin burn classifications
A
- Superficial (first degree)
- Partial thickness (second degree)
- Full thickness (third degree)
3
Q
What are photochemical skin hazards?
A
Skin pigmentation and photosensitising medication (this enhance radiation absorbance - dermal sensitivity to artificial solar radiation = cellular damage
4
Q
Compare and contrast phototoxic and photoallergic photosensitivity reactions
A
- Both photosensitising reaction
- Phototoxic: Accumulation at dermo-epidermal junction act as a chromophore = tissue damage in region
- Photoallergic:
- Occur: common with topically applied agents rather systemic medications
- Skin exposed to photo-allergen substance and contact with light radiation = cause type IV hypersensitivity contact allergic reaction
- Drug become antigen = allergic response
5
Q
How can you appropriately control this hazard in clinical setting?
A
- Administrative control: risk assessment (review procedure and safe operation)
- Regular maintenance: regular testing of machine
- apply relevant Australian Standards to minimis risk
