A3: Laser Plume Flashcards
What is laser plume?
Collection of fine particles varying in size, which disperse in the air during laser treatments, (due to targeting chromophore and thermal reaction) and thermally alter target tissues
What are the general health effects associated with laser plume generation
- Acute and chronic respiratory disorder
E,g. Asthma, acute and chronic bronchitis (lungs inflamed and mucous) and pneumonia (lung infection - Throat irritation and pain
- Eye irritation
Serious health effects associated with laser plume generation?
- Allergic sensitisation
- Viral wart in respiratory tract
- HIV & HPV infection
- Hepatitis
- Cancer: Respiratory, lymphatic and blood related
How can you appropriately control this hazard in clinical setting?
Engineer controls:
- Evacuate plume by Local Exhaust Ventilation (LEV): Extract laser plume through a filter (HEPA or ULPA) to remove the particulate matter, ULPA (ultra low penetration air filter) filter small particles (0.1μm),
Activated charcoal filter: minimise odour of plume
Administrative control:
- Work role rotations: reduce plume exposure
- Training and acknowledgment of PPE
Health ad safety risk training
PPE control:
- Personal Protective Equipment
Particulate filter respirators
