A2.2.4 - Structures Common to All Cells Flashcards

Typical cells have DNA as genetic material & a cytoplasm composed mainly of water, which is enclosed by a plasma membrane composed of lipids. Students should understand the reasons for these structures.

Q

Why is the cytoplasm important?

A
  • Where many chemical reactions occur
  • Contains many dissolved solutes (i.e. carbon compounds, nutrients, ions, inorganic compounds & waste products)
  • Suspends other cell structures

Q

Why is the plasma membrane important?

A
  • Separates the interior of the cell from the exterior environment
→ Controls interactions between a cell’s contents & the exterior
→ i.e. waste products transported out of cell
→ i.e. materials needed transported into cell
  • Membrane proteins helps provide identity properties
→ Helps engage in communication & transport between cells
