A2 Scene1 Flashcards
JUDGE
Ahh good. Show her in.
MARA
Just some routine commitment papers, Your Honor. You’ll find everything in order. I’ve checked them over carefully. The psychiatric report from Bellevue Hospital is attached
JUDGE
Bellevue, eh? Age… unknown. An old man, huh?
MARA
Very old, Your Honor.
JUDGE
(with a sigh) I suppose I should read all this
MARA
You can take my word for it… It’s a clear-cut consent proceeding. This fellow calls himself Kris Kringle. He thinks he’s Santa Claus
JUDGE
(to MARA) I thought you said this case was clear cut
MARA
It was, as far as I knew. This is the first I’ve heard about a challenge
FRED
Fine. And thank you, Your Honor (exits)
JUDGE
Ms. Mara?
MARA
Just when I thought I was getting my calendar cleared for a Christmas vacation… Yes, Your Honor, I’ll work it in
JUDGE
See you Monday, then. (MARA exits)
MARA
(as she passes Finley)
Have a good day, Finley
ALICE SAWYER
Whom do I see about dropping the Kringle commitment case?
MARA
(overhears, stops) Kringle’s commitment case has been challenged, Ms…. ah…..
ALICE SAWYER
Sawyer
MARA
Yes. His certification of insanity is unequivocal. But wouldn’t you know, even Bellevue’s word isn’t good enough
ALICE SAWYER
I’d like this case to be dropped right away. Isn’t there anything we can do?
MARA
Sorry. The hearing is scheduled for next Monday morning
ALICE SAWYER
A public hearing! Attorneys! Mr. Macy has demanded that I get Santa Claus back. This is disastrous!
MARA
Oh, don’t worry. This kid, Gayley, Kringle’s lawyer is just a young sport trying to get himself a little publicity
